Adding Up Years Gracefully

October 31st, 2010 surf4soul No comments

By the end part of 2009, approximately 40 million people will comprise the 65 and up age bracket in the US. This will around 13% of the entire population. Conditions which are often linked to this age group are easy fatigability, weakness and decreasing physical and mental health and increasd depression and anxiety. Having a sedentary lifestyle may be common factor that can exacerbate these conditions. And the most proposed intervention is physical activity. Initiating an exercise program at 65 may be a very good idea however thorough assessment prior to the program is necessary.

The changes that may appear in older persons may be the draw backs of having a sedentary lifestyle. It is not actually saying that having sufficient exercise can stop the process of aging. It might just slow it down. The least it can do is slow down aging’s pace. Exercise is not known as the fountain of youth for nothing. Physical wellness will be radiated on you as you exercise and make your heart beat faster and stronger.

So what are the good things which exercise may bring in older people? Physical changes that are brought about by aging may actually be delayed through physical activity. Physical activity or exercise can actually prevent cancer, high blood pressure and other heart problems. Essentially, older people who engage in physical activities are less likely to depend on long term care compared to those who don’t. They have lesser chance of developing injuries, will have lesser anxiety and have a better outlook in life than those who are commited to sedentary lifestyle. Mature people who have an active lifestyle generally have better skin elasticity which translates to lesser wrinkles and glowing skin which is the result of better blood circulation and oxygenation.

Safety precautions for the mature exerciser should be given considerable thought. Not only because of the older person’s limited physical mobility but also, because they are more prone to dehydration. It is also important to slow down if an exercise causes discomfort or pain. We have to remember that time has taken its’ toll and we’re just trying to salvage what we can. So take it slow and easy. Gentle exercises should be the norm. Any attempt at more vigorous fitness programs should be under the supervision of a professional trainer.

The benefits of exercise are many for the mature exerciser. Coupled with a healthy diet appropriate for his dietary needs, one can expect to enjoy more productivity and better quality of life even if he is in his twilight years. The key is to be consistent in exercising and eating the right foods, getting adequate rest and avoidng substances that can be toxic to one’s health.
